Sexy? Smart? Hipster Cool? Eyewear Trends for 2013

Remember that old saying, “boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses”? I’m pretty sure that today’s generation doesn’t know what that means. In fact, my twelve year old son just asked “what does that mean?” while looking over my shoulder as I typed this. Glasses no longer have that stigma, and in fact, many fashionistas are making a statement with their eyewear. From movie stars to some of my favourite local hipsters, glasses are becoming an accessory, not just a necessity. Here are five of this year’s hottest looks.
Katy Perry
The Cat Eye, a fifties staple, is back on the scene and adored by many glamour girls, including Katy Perry. While Katy’s are a far more exaggerated cat eye, this elongated style is actually really flattering on many face shapes. I recently tried on a pair and was surprised at how much I loved them. For a similar look, check out the Grammar Collection from Derek Cardigan in Dark Timber, Model 7019.

One of the hottest trends in frames is changing the colours on the arms so that they are different from the front, adding an element of surprise. One of my favourite designers, Michael Kors takes a classic look and adds a multi-coloured marble arm that give the frame a more updated look. This pair from Kors, Model 697 200, would look phenomenal on those with lighter coloured eyes.

Dramatic patterns are seeing a comeback. While some are choosing to go with a thicker, darker and heavier frame, a greater contrast in colours like these Joseph Marc 4083 Havana tortoiseshell frames, show that the wearer is willing to take a chance and be bold with their look.

Keyhole detailing is a subtle new trend that is being seen on a lot of frames this year. The keyhole-cut nose bridge has a very vintage feel but look oh-so-current. Ryan Gosling has been seen wearing this style and has no doubt been partially responsible for its rise in popularity. This pair from Derek Cardigan, Model 7023 in Olive, sport a very similar contour.

Statement frames are still hot, and in fact, continue to lead the way in eyewear trends. Thick frames in darker colours were once considered nerdy, but are now the epitome of chic. Trendsetters and celebrities are going geek with bold, stand-out frames that are clearly cool. These 7 For All Mankind 717 frames in dark tortoise are perfect. One of my fave denim brands has branched out to include fabulous frames in their collection.

All frames shown are available online at www.clearlycontacts.com. I recently ordered contacts from them online and it was truly one of the best shopping experiences ever. Not only were my lenses far less expensive than what I was paying in-store, the customer service was superb, and shipping was super-fast. Next time I need to order glasses, they will definitely be the first place I look
